Grove Estate, The Cellar Block, Shiraz 2018
Grove Estate was established by the Flanders, Kirkwood and Mullany families the Hilltops region near Young in 1989. Grape growing at Hilltops goes back to the gold boom of the 1860s. As it turns out the moderate, cool climate and red granite soils are perfectly suited to viticulture. Complex wines with bright flavours and clear varietal characters are the rule here.
“The Cellar Block at Grove Estate continues to be our most outstanding single block of Shiraz. The soil is slightly tighter or tougher than the rest of the vineyard, this has resulted in vines now 25 years old having to fight for their survival. Always picked when flavour ripe and having the best wine making and Oak available the wine is absolutely lovely. Picked on St Patrick’s day how could anything but Saintly describe this wine. Thanks Tim and Bryan the hidden wine makers.” – James Halliday 93:
“This is the estate’s best wine. Made by Tim Kirk at Clonakilla, a smattering of whole-bunch scrub confers some tannic authority and herbal complexity to blue fruits, barbecue tones, iodine and a skirt of peppery acidity. The result is a mid-weighted wine that is a bit scratchy, needing some concentration and jam in the doughnut.” – Ned Goodwin
