Grove Shiraz shines in London!
June 5, 2008
In a coup for the Hilltops Wine District, The Grove Estate 2006 Shiraz Viognier Reserve has won a highly coveted Gold medal at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards in London.
No stranger to show success, the same wine also won the top gold in its class at the 2007 Royal Adelaide Wine Show, along with silver medals at the 2007 Winewise Small Vignerons Awards and the 2007 Boutique Wine Awards.
The Flanders, Kirkwood and Mullany families established the Grove Estate vineyard in the red volcanic soils around Young in New South Wales in 1989. They produce wines under their own label as well as supplying grapes to some of the country's top winemakers.
Clonakilla winemaker Tim Kirk has been buying Shiraz grapes for Clonakilla's Hilltops label from the Grove vineyard since 2000. In 2003 he began producing a Shiraz for Grove which has become a frequent gold medal and trophy winner at regional, national and now international wine shows.
"Grove's fruit is fantastic", Kirk said today. "It's not difficult to make really good wine when you're dealing with such terrific raw materials. The Hilltops district is now really hitting its straps as a producer of reds with real flavour with that extra elegant dimension that a cooler climate provides."
The critics view of the 2006 Grove Shiraz Viognier Reserve:
"This is fragrant and stone-fruit scented: there's apricot , fruitcake and some new kid leatheriness. Has flesh and juice and smoke in the mouth: stone-fruit tangy with forest berry pips. Lean, chewy and dry with raisin sourdough to close. Has juice and raisin at the back. This is smart. 95/100. Buy it now."
